Sleep Technologist Insight and Feedback on the EnsoSleep Scoring Certification Program
One year ago, we launched the EnsoSleep HSAT Scoring Certification program to provide sleep technologists with a free tool to expand their knowledge, expertise, and confidence in reviewing, overscoring, and validating EnsoSleep AI-Scored home sleep apnea tests (HSATs).
To date, 83 sleep technologists have achieved our HSAT Scoring Certification! We deeply appreciate these certified professionals for dedicating time to engage in our program and enhance their understanding of integrating AI technology into their roles as sleep technologists.
We interviewed four certificate holders Laree Fordyce, Diane Ottman, Lisa Bond, and Joseph Castillo, to understand their perspectives on the program’s value. Additionally, we sought their insights on whether other sleep technologists should explore AI scoring. We are grateful for their contributions and the feedback they provided. The responses are color-coded to match the sleep technologists accordingly.
- Laree Fordyce, RPSGT, RST, CCSH, Clinical Sleep Business Development Manager, Air Liquide
- Diane Ottman, RPSGT, Self Employed
- Lisa Bond, RPSGT, FAAST, Director, Advanced Sleep Management
- Joseph Castillo, RPSGT, RST, CCSH, BSN, RN, FAASM, FAAST, Sunset Sleep Labs, Ascension HealthCare System, SleepSv
Was the EnsoSleep HSAT Scoring Certification process what you expected?
It was pretty much what I expected. After scoring for so many years it felt like an interscorer reliability record that I was used to scoring on a monthly basis.
Yes. I had been involved in the beta testing so I was familiar with the Enso scoring platform.
I found it unexpectedly challenging despite conducting over 48,000 sleep studies and considering myself an expert in the field. Achieving the required 85%+ for certification on the EnsoData platform proved difficult for new users on their first attempt.
What was your biggest takeaway from the certification program?
I’m excited about the role of AI in sleep medicine. I think sleep, with all its metrics, is particularly suited to the utilization of AI.
Try out a new system that explores how artificial intelligence aids in grading studies and measures its concordance with assessments made by professional sleep technologists—machine versus human perspectives.
AI scoring is very close to my own scoring.
How will you apply this knowledge to your current role?
I feel increasingly confident in my skills and understanding of machine learning, ensuring I stay current with technology rather than falling behind.
The efficiency of EnsoData can be very helpful today. Especially with the sleep tech shortage we are experiencing.
I am a remote scorer and anything that can help in that area is of interest to me.
Why would you recommend this certification program to other sleep technologists?
It will encourage them to trust the process.
Techs can see for themselves how AI scoring is better than auto scoring. It is a useful tool to create efficiency, but you still need human oversight. It’s not a replacement.
It’s uncommon for this type of certification exams to be rigorous to ensure high standards in the field and interact with current and future technology. You will thrive.
What other certifications or sources for educational development would you recommend to your peers?
AAST CCSH modules and the BRPT CCSH exam.
A-Step programs are listed on the BRPT site which is helpful. I feel like I would benefit from learning of other resources. I hope EnsoData will make these available. You all have been my go-to for staying updated in the field of sleep.
