Answering 10 questions about EnsoSleep’s on the fly scoring support for night technologists: Realtime Scoring
At EnsoData, we’re committed to “Putting Customers First.” It’s one of our True North tenets. So, when it came to prioritizing the development of new features, we surveyed our customers to ensure that we were aligned with the needs of their sleep labs. The overwhelming response from many of our survey respondents was simple: a solution to assist night technologists with scoring on the fly. We’re excited to announce EnsoSleep Realtime Scoring, a solution made to optimize the sleep lab workflow for split night criteria, optimal titration pressure, and on the fly scoring.
What is Realtime Scoring for sleep studies?
EnsoSleep Realtime Scoring scores sleep studies on the fly, with results available 7-10 minutes behind the live recording. Not only does Realtime Scoring provide detailed analysis right away, it also provides intelligent clinical assistants called “scoring companions,” which simplify the work for overnight technologists.
The scoring companions include the split-night criteria companion, an optimal titration pressure companion, and a live scoring companion.

When sleep lab adds Realtime Scoring, studies ready for live scoring will appear in the sleep study management dashboard with the tag: Realtime.
How many sleep labs score studies at night?
We estimate around half of sleep labs use a night scoring model where night techs score the study in real time and generate an initial report for interpreting physicians immediately in the morning following a sleep study.
In this scenario, night scoring technologists would score the study about 15-30 minutes after the data is captured, while continuing to monitor the study in real time. At the end of the night, techs review the entire night of scoring, make adjustments where required, then generate and send a report to the physician. Typically, this is all done while also monitoring leads and ensuring each patient’s needs are met throughout the night.
What are the EnsoSleep Realtime Scoring Companions?
EnsoSleep Realtime Scoring companions are software-driven clinical assistants which can be found in the Sleep Study Management dashboard. The companions enable a night tech to optimize the following workflows: split nights, titrations, and scoring on the fly.
How does Realtime Scoring support clean overnight data acquisition?
One of the biggest benefits of the Realtime Scoring solution is that it allows night techs to be more engaged with the patient taking the sleep test. This might include troubleshooting bad signals, ensuring leads stay on, and increasing the patient-tech ratio without worrying about falling behind in scoring. Live staging and respiratory event scoring provided by EnsoSleep make it easier for the tech to support the patient and still produce a report ready for physician review in the morning.
How can Realtime Scoring Help with Split Night studies?
Per the AAST, the standard protocols for a split night study include either an AHI greater than 40 during more than 2 hours of sleep or an AHI of 20 to 39 with strong supportive evidence of OSA (severe desaturations, repetitive obstructive apneas).
To assist techs who require a split night study, try out the EnsoSleep Realtime Scoring split night companion. Night techs simply enter the specific split criteria into the companion before the test.
Audio and visual cues notify techs when a patient has reached the specified split criteria. The audio chimes continue until a tech addresses the split, providing a level of support even if they are occupied in another room at the initial moment of the split. This helps reduce the likelihood that a patient will need to be brought back in for a repeat titration.
Can Realtime Scoring Detect Titration Events?
Yes, the Realtime Scoring titration companion provides night techs with notifications when titration events are detected. The titration companion will automatically switch from an all-night summary to a titration table, giving night techs all the information needed to confidently make pressure or other therapy adjustments.

The image above displays a titration table in progress as it populates during the study.
With the three scoring companions supporting techs throughout the night, techs can confidently focus on generating quality data acquisition, getting a good titration, and providing high caliber patient care because EnsoSleep is handling the scoring.
What else is important to know about EnsoSleep Realtime Scoring?
Beyond the benefits highlighted above, Realtime Scoring companions provide a great framework for teaching students and new techs how to score.
Can Realtime Scoring Help Onboard Night Techs?
Absolutely. Sleep labs can trust the Realtime Scoring modules to guide new techs during onboarding, so experienced night techs can continue to monitor and care for in-lab patients. Utilize Realtime Scoring to create a sustainable, consistent onboarding experience for new night techs.
How can Realtime Scoring Help New Sleep Students?
Realtime Scoring assists sleep schools that teach students how to score. Learning how to score by doing is very valuable. Provide students with hands-on scoring experience by using the various companions to support them during the study.
How is Realtime Scoring Priced?
To enable Realtime Scoring, sleep labs must have both EnsoSleep PSG AI Scoring and access to the Sleep Study Management platform. Beyond that, there is no additional cost for Realtime Scoring.
